Part of a large rugby league playing family (four of his brothers were professionals) Iva Ropati first came to England in 1989 to play at Featherstone from the Auckland league. Within weeks of his arrival he played and scored in the Yorkshire Cup final against Bradford. He finished that debut season with 15 tries from 26 matches. The following year he played for Sheffield and Oldham before he was selected for the 1993 New Zealand tour squad, appearing in four tests. At the end of that tour he re-signed for Rovers, managing 14 tries in 21 games in the rest of that season. His last game was in November 1994 before he tried his luck in the ARL where he represented Parramatta and the Auckland Warriors. After playing, he became a High School head teacher in Auckland.
