Jack Ashton originally signed for Featherstone as a youngster in the club’s junior days, and made a name for himself as a strong running forward. In January 1920 he was sold to York, and enjoyed a professional career there, as well as at Leeds and Bramley. He returned to Featherstone in November 1924 and enjoyed a memorable debut against Dewsbury, sent-off for fighting and picking up a three-match ban.

From then on, he became a regular fixture in the Featherstone back-row for the next five seasons, and continued his penchant for try scoring, unusual in an era when forwards rarely found themselves in try scoring situations. His tally of 13 tries in 1926/7 was topped the following year when his 14 tries made him the club’s leading try scorer that season. He was unlucky to be ruled out of that season’s Championship final through injury and he also missed the 1928 Yorkshire Cup final. He retired from playing in the summer of 1929.
