What a memorable debut Jack Darbyshire had. From the same Girnhill Lane Intermediates team as Harold Moxon, his career could hardly have started any better. Aged 23, he was picked at stand-off to partner Moxon at half-back, he put Bill Jackson in for a try and then scored himself as Rovers won a local derby against Castleford 10-2.  He showed “initiative and speed”, and showed up well in what remained of that season, filling in at centre and on the wing too. But that was as far as Darbyshire’s career went. The following year he was called on just once, as an injury crisis coincided with a trip to Wigan. Darbyshire played scrum-half, did well, but the following week was back with the reserves.
