When Abe Bullock took over as Chairman of Featherstone Rovers in 1937 he immediately launched a 5,000 shilling appeal to raise funds to strengthen the team which had finished bottom of the league in 1936/37. Having not made a single signing in the transfer market during the 1936/37 season, the new chairman was determined to improve the playing squad. Second-row forward Jack Evans was one of a number of new signings. He signed from Dewsbury having made four first team appearances for them the previous season. In his short Rovers career Jack played his part in improved performances, as Rovers lifted themselves off the bottom of the league to become a side which was much more competitive.
