Jack Morrell was a well-known local athlete and won the British schoolboy's sprint title in 1913.  He signed as a professional when Rovers became a senior club in 1921. His debut was in Rovers second ever fixture, the only change to the Original XIII line up for a trip to Headingley just 48 hours after Featherstone's first ever senior game. Morrell was the only player with fresh legs, having replaced Dooler, and it showed in a lacklustre performance where Rovers were well beaten 42-3 by a powerful Leeds team. Nevertheless, Morrell showed his worth with 23 appearances in our debut season.

After his rugby career Jack went into politics having joined the labour party. He was elected a councillor in Pontefract in 1945, and in 1953 became the 482nd Mayor of Pontefract. Jack was a publican, and was at the time he became mayor, landlord of the Windmill Hotel in Pontefract and chairman of the local Licensed Victuallers’' Association.
