James Dean made his first team debut for Rovers at Headingley against Leeds in March 1928, after just a few weeks of trialling with the A team. Hailing from Altofts, he was a well built forward who immediately made his presence felt. On his debut he “gave abundant evidence that he will make an excellent forward”. However, it was also noted that “he needs to curb a tendency to over-robustness”. In his second game Dean “confirmed the good impression he had shown on his debut”, but he was not signed on and never played for Rovers again.
