When Yorkshire county hooker Percy Morris left Featherstone, the number nine shirt was up for grabs and it became a straight fight between  Vic Darlison and James Mullins.  Mullins an ex-Dewsbury player never let the side down, but Darlison had that extra touch of class that got him the nod and would later bring him silverware at Bradford after the war. Nevertheless Mullins managed 21 first team games until Rovers swopped Darlison for veteran Joe Golby from Wigan who immediately became first choice hooker in October 1938. Mullins didn’t get a look in after that.
