Jeff Townsend arrived at Featherstone as an unheralded signing in 1975, cover in the front-row for international stars Jimmy Thompson and Vince Farrar. With Mick Gibbins also available, the position of prop seem well covered. Just five games in two years was Townsend’s only reward. When Jimmy Thompson was sold to Bradford, Townsend got a longer first team run, revealing also his hidden goal-kicking skills. With Steve Quinn out injured Townsend kicked eight from eight against Hull KR to clinch a 25-24 victory in a John Player Trophy tie. He also played in the 1977 Yorkshire Cup final defeat to Castleford. The return to Featherstone of Terry Clawson once again curtailed Townsend’s chances. He later played for both Wigan and Leeds.
