Local man Jim Lavin had an unpromising debut as Rovers were a man short for a long trip to league newcomers Whitehaven in September 1948. Lavin did well enough to stay in first team reckoning and went on to play 36 games in two seasons of relentless toil for a struggling Featherstone team. After an impressive performance in a narrowly beaten Rovers team at Hull KR, the home club were so impressed they promptly signed Lavin the following week.
