Born at Monk Fryston, Joe played for Lock Lane before signing for Castleford in 1948. He was a tough prop forward who played over 200 games for Castleford, before signing for Leeds. Going on to win a Yorkshire County cap at Castleford and playing for Leeds in their 1957 Challenge Cup final victory.

By the time Joe joined Featherstone in 1958 he had set up his own haulage company, J.T.Anderson Transport, and he proved to be a masterstroke signing for Rovers. At the beginning of season 1958/59 the Rovers were looking to strengthen their pack following the departure in the past close season of Ken Wellburn and Harry Street (retired) and the transfer of Albert Fearnley and Stan Moyser to Batley. They signed Frank Moore from York and then acquired Joe Anderson from Leeds. He was not on the transfer list but his transfer was agreed at £1000. He injured his ankle on his debut, was out for four matches and when reappeared he was sent off. After a 3 match suspension he returned but then dislocated his shoulder. He recovered from this awful start and went from strength to strength, showing the form he was capable of. His withdrawal through injury on the morning of the RL Cup Semi Final v Wakefield in 1960 was a huge blow and he was sorely missed. His experience played a big part in the famous Challenge Cup runs in the late 1950s and the Yorkshire  Cup Final victory in 1959 and helped bring on future international forwards like Malcolm Dixon and Terry Clawson. Joe retired in 1961 at the age of 32 having made 47 appearances for Featherstone.
