In October 1946, Rovers signed ex-Coldstream Guardsman Joe Atherton who had played with the Guards rugby union team.  His first appearance coincided with Rovers first win of that season against York on 2 November 1946.  There weren't to be many more wins that season, just 9 out of 36 games, and Joe managed only 12 appearances before his Rovers career was over.
