One of the thirteen “Originals”, Joe Kirkham was signed from Dewsbury for Rovers’ senior debut with the express intention of lending experience to the new boys of rugby league. He was one of the very small number of ‘imports’ brought in to bolster the Rovers’ squad, and the move paid dividends. Kirkham score a try in our first ever game at Birch Lane, Bradford, and finished that debut season as the club’s top try scorer with 11. The following year was equally successful, but after Christmas 1923 he was traded to Hull KR in exchange for Jos McGlone and a small fee. Kirkham’s contribution to the early professional days of Featherstone Rovers was greatly appreciated.
