Of all the signings that Featherstone Rovers made for the 2022 season, it was Samoan international centre Joey Leilua, with his vast experience at NRL level, who caused the most excitement. His career had taken him from Sydney Roosters to Newcastle, Canberra and Wests, and he played at the 2013 and 2017 World Cups. However, at Featherstone, it took a while for Leilua to get back to full fitness after a spell out of the game, and to adapt to British playing conditions. In creating a try on his debut, he injured his hamstring. Once fit, he was a huge presence in the three-quarter line, causing problems for the opposition on and off the ball. There were also times during the year when Rovers' game plan did not make the most of his potential, although when utilised properly, he was a potent attacking threat, as his 17 tries testified. Often, his mere presence close to the opposition line created gaps for team-mates, well marked as he was by opposition defenders.

With the weight of expectation lifted, Leilua had more impact in his second season. Despite struggling with his recurring hamstring injury, he scored 15 tries in 20 matches, including two in the Championship semi-final defeat by London. He departed back to Australia after the end of that unsuccessful campaign, part of a large clearout of playing staff.
