In August 1924 Rovers signed promising stand-off John Allen from Sharlston, apparently in the face of competition from Wakefield Trinity. His signing was designed to remedy a difficulty the club had experienced with the stand-off position the previous season. Unfortunately, John didn't prove to be the answer, as he made three consecutive appearances from his debut but all games were lost, and he never made the first team again. Instead, Rovers opted to install Jimmy Williams regularly in the stand-off position.
