John Bell was the third son of Jimmy Bell to play first team rugby at Featherstone. John signed on from our juniors on his 16th birthday in the face of opposition from other clubs, as a loose forward.  However, much of his time at Rovers was spent in the centre position. He went on to play 20 senior games intermittently over the next five seasons. Towards the end of the 1965/66 John played a few games with his older brother Peter in the first team, with Peter at stand-off and John at centre. John then left Featherstone, and played for Batley alongside future Rovers chairman Steve Lingard, when a bad knee injury ended his career.
