John Hay came from Airedale, and when Featherstone Rovers signed him from Fryston Juniors, he joined a club who were beginning to develop a very strong team. Hay quickly won a first team place at centre, and in his debut season he managed a reasonable return of a try every two games. When Peter Fox took over he had an embarrassment of riches to choose from at centre with John Newlove, Keith Cotton and Mick Smith all competing with Hay for a place. Talented though he was, as each season passed he received less opportunities and had to bide his time in the reserves. Overlooked for the 1973 and 1974 Cup finals, his final game was in September 1974. Decades later, John’s son Andy became Featherstone’s head coach.
