John Hunter from Streethouse was a talented footballer who was persuaded to try rugby by Rovers player Steve Hankins in 1984 when he set up a new Streethouse amateur club.  After only a couple of games he was attracting interest from a number of clubs including Hull when Rovers stepped in to sign him.  He played well in the A team and managed a solitary first team appearance in December 1984 but was unlikely to take over from Deryck Fox at first team level.  Shortly afterwards he disappeared from the club and would eventually pay back some of his signing fee so he could return to playing semi-professional football.
