Featherstone Rovers rarely struggled for quality local half-backs, but the club was particularly blessed with talent at both stand-off and scrum-half in the early 1950s. However, the club signed Johnny Heritage from Doncaster at a time when it was preoccupied with the stand-off position. Heritage had started as a youngster at Bradford and had been with the Dons a year when Rovers called. Within months of his arrival, Featherstone signed Joe Mullaney and both players obviously had eyes on the number six shirt. Although Heritage showed himself to be skilful stand-off and useful goal-kicker, his career inevitably suffered as a consequence of competing with Mullaney. Having played just 16 games in four seasons, due in part to a knee injury, Heritage retired.
