Featherstone born and educated at King’s School Pontefract, Johnny Malpass was born into rugby league and signed for his hometown team  in 1933. A strong runner and fearless tackler, Malpass was a natural and slotted into the Rovers three-quarter line. After more than 90 games in three seasons Rovers reluctantly took the decision to sell Malpass to rivals Wakefield for a much needed cash boost. He turned out to be an excellent buy for Trinity and a major loss to Featherstone. His progress at Belle Vue was interrupted by World War Two where he served in the Middle East as a PT instructor and played rugby union for the British Army. Once the war was over, his playing career was unfortunately finished by a knee injury and he turned to training and coaching.
