After a steady start to his career as well-built prop forward at Dewsbury, then Batley, Keegan Hirst showed enough potential for Featherstone Rovers to sign him up for 2014. He failed to settle at Rovers, rarely playing to his potential, although a loan spell back at Batley in the middle of the season seemed to revitalise him and he showed better form in the latter part of the year. He came off the bench in the 2014 Grand final defeat by Leigh. Inevitably, he moved back to Batley for the 2015 season. The following season his life was transformed when he ‘came out’ as professional rugby league’s first openly gay player, and a media circus sprang up around him. It didn’t seem to affect his game as he won a contract with Super League club Wakefield from 2017.
