Toohey joined Rovers in September 1973 in a deal which took Keith Cotton and £1,750 to Mount Pleasant in exchange. At Batley in 1971 he was one of two winners in a national goal-kicking cometition. The other winner was Steve Quinn of York. Toohey settled in quickly at Post Office Road, adding much needed vitality in the centre and in his first six games registered five tries.  An injury in December that year proved troublesome but he did find himself part of the 1974 Wembley squad.  His form wasn't great at the start of the 1974/75 season and he was transferred.
