Ken Elford was born in Castleford but did not start playing regular rugby until his national service in 1950.  After playing a couple of seasons with Sandal RU he signed for Rovers in September 1954.  He was primarily a full back and found his first team appearances limited by Jackie Fennell’s form.  His ungainly but effective running earned him the nickname “Legs” Elford, and on defence he never shirked a tackle. He was also a useful kicker when given the opportunity.
