In February 1947, Featherstone Rovers were enduring another awful season. Desperate times call for desperate measures and the perennially broke club splashed out on two experienced forwards to shore up the pack. Jack Maiden from Dewsbury and Ken Palmer from Wakefield joined in the same week, and although their debuts ended in defeat, it was a very creditable defeat to Hunslet. Results eventually started to go Rovers’ way and Palmer grabbed tries in an impressive 14-0 win over Hull KR and an even more impressive 17-14 win at Leeds. The following year Palmer was first choice prop in a front row alongside Jack Maiden and Cyril Pawson. A persistent shoulder injury forced his retirement the following year.
