Laurie Gunn signed for his hometown team from Featherstone Intermediates in the summer of 1947. He overcame an inauspicious start as a stand-off to find his place on the wing, managing 16 appearances in his debut year. He was used less and less over the following years, though he did deputise for Ray Evans at scrum-half towards the end of the 1952/3 season. He then went on loan to Doncaster in October 1953 and the move was made permanent in February 1954, the Dons paying a fee of £200.
