Lee Whiteley made his first team debut in a memorable Yorkshire Cup semi-final replay at Wheldon Road where Rovers came from behind in the dying minutes to beat Castleford 28-26. He didn't play in the final though as regular hooker Trevor Clark was fit to play, and that was to be the story of his Rovers career where he spent most of his time in the reserves as understudy to Clark. His rugby career had begun early with Eastmoor, before signing for Rovers from Featherstone Miners Welfare.
