Len Hammill was a powerful front row forward who had the rare distinction of playing of playing for three different professional clubs in one year in 1960, and was also capped by Yorkshire.  Len came from Leeds, and was signed by Bramley from the Sheepscar Juniors in 1955. He gave solid service at Bramley for five years before, out of the blue, the then reigning Rugby League Champions, St.Helens, moved in to sign him in February 1960 for a £4,000 fee. lt was a testament to Hammill's abilities that Saints thought him worthy of such a fee when they already had a pack of international forwards. 

However, Len never settled at Knowsley Road as he did not want to uproot his family from Yorkshire - he worked in Leeds Market. Knowing this, Featherstone approached St.Helens about him in August 1960, and found Saints wanted to exchange Hammill for "promising youngster Terry Clawson."  Rovers declined this offer, but eventually agreed to pay a £2,500 transfer fee for Len - which was a club record, beating the £1,000 they had previously paid for Tony Storey and Joe Anderson.

Hammill made his Featherstone debut on 3rd September 1960, at home to Oldham. He made the number eight jersey his own and played his part in Rovers' Cup runs of 1961 and 1962, his good form leading to his selection for Yorkshire against Lancashire at Leigh in October 1961. Len retained his Yorkshire position the following season, playing in both County Championship victories as Yorkshire won the title. He went on to make 94 appearances for Featherstone, scoring 13 tries, before retiring from the game at the end of November 1963.
