Les Evans rugby career started at North Featherstone Secondary Modern school, continued to the Miners’ Welfare team and he duly signed for Rovers as a teenager in 1955. In his first season he played with the reserves at stand-off but he first team debut the following year was on the wing. He settled later into the centre position. He lived at Sharlston, worked at Snydale Colliery as a belt maintenance worker, and was also a keen cricketer for Streethouse CC in the summer. After four seasons of first team rugby he was placed on the transfer list and stopped playing.
