Les “Butch” Payne was a no nonsense Featherstone miner who took to life in the pack at Rovers naturally. He started playing for the intermediates as a teenager immediately after the war, and made his first team debut in April 1947. In four years solid work, he clocked up almost 100 first team appearances, unmistakable on the field, for his tackling, his refusal to take a backward step and his noticeable headgear. He was disappointingly sold to Batley, where he never really settled, and he had to prematurely retire at 26 due to a recurring knee injury. He did however make a brief comeback at the fledgling Doncaster club before his knee gave way again.
