Liam Finn was a hugely influential scrum-half who played some of the best rugby of a creditable career with Featherstone Rovers. The Halifax-born son of Brendan Finn, he started at his hometown team, and aged just 22 came to an ailing Rovers side looking at relegation from the Championship. He failed to halt the slide in a disjointed team, despite scoring 8 tries and 80 goals in just over half a season. He then played four years at Dewsbury, showing remarkable consistency and durability, earning a reputation as hardly ever missing a match. He also developed his game-management and kicking game. Daryl Powell took a punt on him and brought him to Featherstone as a hooker. That didn’t work out, but he soon started to shine at scrum-half. In all four seasons at Rovers, Finn helped his club to the League Leaders’ Shield, and to Grand final appearance in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The midfield general who led his team around the park, Finn also kicked a phenomenal number of goals, equally the record for goals in a match, breaking the record for goals in a season and finishing as Rovers third greatest kicker ever from just 139 matches.

Finn’s departure at the end of 2013 proved to be a mistake. He had played in 139 games out of 140 in his time at Featherstone and was impossible to replace. A player thought to be short of pace and now aged 30 stepped up to Super League and played two seasons with Castleford and three seasons at Wakefield. His international career with Ireland spanned over a decade, and he became their most capped player and captain. He appeared for them at the 2008, 2013 and 2017 World Cups. He was granted an RFL benefit in 2013 for services to the sport.
