A local product, Malcolm Barraclough's early career was interrupted by a knee injury, but he stayed with the club a number of seasons, serving the A team with occasional first team opportunities. In 1961 he left the club and joined the police force where he had some success playing rugby union for their representative side. in 1963, he started training back with Rovers, as a condition of his police contract he could only play as an amateur, and picked up 3 further first team appearances.
