Mally Kirk was a useful prop forward who went on to much greater fame as a wrestler once his rugby career was over. Featherstone born, a naturally very strong athlete, he began his rugby career with Featherstone juniors captaining the sucessful U18s team in 1955 where he personally scored 385 points (182 goals and 7 tries).  Making his first team debut in April 1955 he teamed up with Kenny Welburn and Willis Fawley in a formidable front-row. In 1957, in the face of strong competition from the newly signed Wynn Jones, Kirk moved to Doncaster where he had some success.

He then gave up the game to become a wrestler and became a household name as “King Kong” Kirk in the 70s and 80s as the popularity of wrestling on TV took off. He died aged 50, his life tragically cut short by an accident in a bout with Shirley “Big Daddy” Crabtree.
