Mark Aston and Daryl Powell were the mainstays of the fledgling Sheffield Eagles team formed in 1984. Aston had been capped for Great Britain when he became a big money transfer signing by Featherstone in the summer of 1994. Despite a relatively successful season when Rovers reached the Challenge Cup semi-final, Aston never settled at Post Office Road and moved back to Sheffield in late 1995 where he played the rest of his career before becoming their now long-serving head coach. He won the Lance Todd Trophy in the 1998 Challenge Cup final.
