With Featherstone Rovers already relegated at the end of a disappointing season in 1987, coach Paul Daley took the opportunity to blood some younger players from the reserves. Hooker had been a major problem all year long, and so Mark Hinchcliffe got his chance to shine. When Peter Fox arrived that summer, he preferred veteran Keith Bell in the hooking role, and Hinchcliffe was not used again.
