Although the first team number nine shirt belonged to Ray Handscombe in the early 1980s, Rovers reserve team had a number of promising young hookers vying for a spot. One such player was Mark Shaw. He made his first team debut with Handscombe out injured, but inevitably had to make way upon his return. With added competition for his A team place from Tony O’Toole, Shaw’s career of just six first team matches came to an end.
