A talented half-back as a youngster, Mark Wilson had been on the fringes of first team football at both Leeds and Bradford where his career was stymied by injuries. He came to Second Division Featherstone under coach Steve Martin and initially was understudy to Brett Daunt at scrum-half. An injury to skipper Richard Gunn led Martin to play Wilson at hooker with some success. He also took over the captaincy. He picked up a Championship winners’ medal and at Old Trafford in the Premiership final he captained the side, with Gunn on the bench. The following year with Gunn fully fit again Wilson played just five games and he retired at the end of 1993/94.
