Originally from Normanton, 20 year old Martin Slater was signed from Castleford for £5,000 at the start of 1986/87 season with a view to replacing Bob Spurr who had announced his retirement. Unfortunately his performances in the first team did not convince coach Paul Daley to install him as first choice with a variety of different players being chosen at hooker throughout a difficult season that ended in relegation.  Slater’s career at Featherstone consisted of just eight appearances, but a decade later his younger brother Richard followed him into the Rovers first team.
