Matt Bowen originally played for the Purston White Horse club and signed for Hunslet in 1913/14. After the war, he came back to his home-town to play for Featherstone Rovers and played four games in our debut season.

After retiring from playing, Bowen was involved in a most curious event at Post Office Road. In February 1926 for the match against York the appointed referee failed to show up. With both teams ready and a crowd assembled, it was decided to play the game anyway as a friendly. Bowen, a spectator, was asked to be the referee. Rovers won easily, and when the RFL came to review the circumstances the following week, they decided the match and result would stand as ‘official’, which it did despite York’s protests of not having taken the game seriously.
