Matt Calland was a Rochdale born centre who left his hometown club aged 22 to sign for a Featherstone Rovers side that had recently lost Paul Newlove. Calland was a tough and uncompromising centre who gave his all over two seasons. When the Super League bombshell hit, and it was clear Rovers were to be excluded, Matt moved on to Bradford Bulls, appearing in the 1996 and 1997 Challenge Cup finals and winning Super League in 1997. He won an England cap in 1996. He later played for Hull and Huddersfield before moving back to Rochdale. He then went into coaching, leading Halifax to their surprise Grand Final victory over Rovers in 2010, as well as a spell at hometown Rochdale.
