The summer of 2000 saw veteran Australian Matt Lambert return to Post Office Road as pack leader and first team skipper. Lambert had come over from Australia to play at Hunslet in 1994 where he spent three seasons.  His first spell at Featherstone was in 1997, where his straight running and ball-handling were a feature of his game. Not retained for 1998, he moved to York for a couple of seasons. In his second spell, he brought a wealth of experience to a youngish pack. Lambert played a total of 57 games for Featherstone over his two spells, and helped the club through a transition period.
