Hull-born, Matty Dale came through the ranks at Hull FC after signing from Embassy Longhill ARLFC. A shoulder injury hindered his progress and he had a loan spell at Featherstone in 2007. A second loan spell in 2008 turned into a permanent move and Dale’s career as a mobile and hard-working back-rower flourished. He was a first team fixture over five seasons, which coincided with Rovers’ unprecedented domination of the Championship. He played in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Championship Grand finals. After showing remarkable consistency, a serious knee injury in 2014 ruined his season and forced him into early retirement. A brief comeback attempt at York in 2016 was not successful. His record of 54 tries in 166 appearances was credit to the intelligent lines he ran and an eye for the gap in a free-scoring Rovers team.
