Some eye-catching performances at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup for Papua New Guinea saw prop forward McKenzie Yei make the move from the Queensland Cup, where he played for PNG Hunters and Central Queensland Capras, to Featherstone Rovers. Known for his strong running and offload game, that is exactly what he brought to Post Office Road, used effectively off the bench in the early part of the season. Part of his progress was learning to curb his natural instinct to offload at every opportunity, and he was part of a formidable interchange bench that dominated opposition forwards week after week in the Championship. The latter part of his season was hampered by injuries and he appeared in just one of the last ten fixtures.

Those injuries persisted into 2024 and it wasn't until the seventh game of the season that Yei was declared fit to play in a Cup tie at Leigh. A disastrously short spell saw him sin-binned for a reckless tackle, suspended, and then had his contract terminated with ongoing fitness problems.
