Mick Hirst signed for Rovers at the beginning of the 1954/55 season following a successful spell in rugby union playing for Sandal, the RAF and Roundhay.  His preferred position was stand-off but he found his path to regular first team rugby in that position was blocked by Joe Mullaney.  Consequently Mick was in turn played in the centre, wing and stand-off according to the demands of the club. This versatility did not prevent him being recognised as a class player with a deceptive body swerve and change of pace that gained him county honours in the centre, playing for Yorkshire against the New Zealand Tourists in 1955.  He suffered some nasty injuries at the end of the 1955/56 season, he recovered to again play first team rugby but the lack of a regular start in his preferred position eventually resulted in his transfer to Batley in January 1957.
