Featherstone paid a record transfer fee of £500 to secure the services of Fred Gordon “Mike” Quick in November 1946 from Warrington.  An ex-bomber pilot in the Second World War he played rugby union before joining Warrington.  At the time he was living in Doncaster so found travelling to Warrington and running his business difficult so asked for a move.  He had offers from a number of clubs but chose Featherstone as that was the closest to his home.  From a Rovers perspective it was hoped he could provide an answer to the problem centre position. He had mixed reviews during his spell at the club as he struggled to consistently display the type of form the club had hoped, admittedly this was a challenge in a floundering side that finished third bottom of the league in 1946/47.
