A career ending injury to the talented Phil Butler left Featherstone Rovers in the unusual position of being so short of scrum-half talent that they needed to go out and buy. In came Neil Pickerill from Batley, an organiser and tactical kicker to stake his claim to the number seven jersey. Under coach Vince Farrar he formed a half-back partnership with first Phil Johnson, then Alan Banks. When Allan Agar took over, he experimented with switching loose forward Terry Hudson back to his old scrum-half position and everything clicked into place for that remarkable Challenge Cup run of 1983. Despite his best efforts, Pickerill was out in the cold, and failed to make the Wembley squad. After just four further games the following year, he left Featherstone and went back to Batley.
