The departure of Martin Pearson in 1996 left a huge hole in Rovers’ side. At first, coach David Ward turned to Neil Summers signed from Bradford. Although lacking pace, he was a player who showed good skills at Championship level. As a former rugby union fly-half he inevitably had a decent kicking game, always a handy attribute for a stand-off. He formed a useful partnership with Deryck Fox, but by the end of 1997 Fox had moved on and Summers retired.
