During the 1968/69 season Rovers found themselves with a surfeit of good inside backs (Newlove, Jordan, Hartley, Smith, Cotton) and a shortage of outside backs.  In October, Norman Oliver, was taken on a one month trial from Hull in an effort to plug this gap.  Whilst not managing to score he did enough to persuade the committee he was worth signing.  Terms were agreed with Hull but the player himself could not be persuaded to sign and so returned to Hull.
