Originally from Kippax, Paul Darley arrived at Rovers via Castleford, Hull and York, but there was no doubt he played the best rugby of his career for Featherstone under coach Peter Roe. After starting out at loose forward in the 2001 season, he quickly established a reputation as a grafter. Tough tackling and hard-working, he became a dependable figure in the Rovers pack. For 2002 he was used mostly off the bench, where he showed some of his versatility in his ability to play acting half-back. Injury problems restricted him in 2003 as he developed his new role as interchange hooker with Richard Chapman. In 2004, the defensively solid Darley was used more to start games, with the creative Chapman then replacing him as the game progressed. After four seasons and clocking up over 100 first team matches, the knee injury that had been bothering him finally finished his career prematurely.

He won three caps for his adopted country Ireland, all of which he gained after retiring from club rugby in 2004.
