Paul Handforth was a Wakefield-based half-back who signed for Trinity as a teenager after playing his junior rugby at Oulton. He inherited his father’s nickname as a player, “Tiger”, and quickly made the Wakefield first team in Super League. After five seasons at Belle Vue, and a brief stay at Castleford, Handforth arrived at the third level Featherstone Rovers with a brief to get us promoted. In a half-back partnership with Chris Ross, and then more productively with newcomer Andy Kain, Handforth achieved that goal.

The following year, back in the Championship, Paul was joined at Featherstone by his brother Matt and they occasionally played together. At the end of the 2008 season, Rovers signed Iestyn Harris to partner Kain in the halves and Handforth moved on to serve a couple of seasons each at Batley, Halifax and Keighley, often being a thorn in Rovers’ side in opposition. After 17 seasons and over 350 games as a professional he retired in 2016. He qualified for Ireland under the heritage rule and won eight caps for his adopted country, but missed out on the 2008 World Cup after making the train on squad whilst at Featherstone.
