Paul Harkin was a busy scrum-half who, after starting at Bradford, made his name at Hull KR. When Featherstone Rovers got to Wembley in 1983, Harkin was drafted in on a month’s loan to give first teamers (principally Terry Hudson) a breather before the final. Given that Rovers were still in relegation worries at that time, it was a risky strategy, but Rovers managed to secure enough points to survive and lift the cup at Wembley. Harkin went on to win successive Championship medals at Hull KR, played for Great Britain, two Challenge Cup finals at Wembley, and in the latter part of his career played for Leeds and Bradford among other clubs.
