Aged 33, Paul Sykes had a long and impressive CV when he joined Jon Sharp’s Featherstone for the 2015 season. A career that covered Bradford, London and Wakefield contained more than 300 Super League appearances, Great Britain caps and a member of England’s 2008 World Cup campaign. He was made captain of Featherstone Rovers, and took over the goal-kicking duties. With Gareth Moore as his half-back partner, Rovers’ intention was to challenge for the Qualifying Eights playoffs at the end of the year.

In the end, the club fell just short and for the Championship Shield coach Jon Sharp brought in Paul Cooke at stand-off and Sykes switched to centre. He finished the year with 18 tries, the club’s top try scorer for the year. He also kicked 104 goals for 280 points, the first time a player had topped the try and goal lists since Jamie Rooney in 2002. Sykes then moved to Dewsbury, playing a further 100 career games, showing his remarkable durability over twenty years in the sport.
